YOU
CAN NOW HIRE A CHEF EASILY
“It’s
lazy women that employ people to cook for them”, my husband shouted angrily, “how
can you as an African woman say you want to employ someone just to cook?” he
continued,
“My
mother had six of us, all boys; she cooked, cleaned, did the dishes, did our
laundry including my dad’s and she never complained talk more of employing
someone to do the chores”,
Does this scenario sound familiar to you?
My dear virtuous woman if you break down and
die, your darling master sorry husband will get another slave, I mean wife,
So listen and listen well
Hiring a chef has been made easy.
You can now hire
a chef from the comfort of your home at the click of a button.
Here are some tips to guide you:
First you must know the difference between a chef and a
cook, a chef is not a cook but a cook
can become a chef.
A cook is an individual who follows outlined recipes
more like a copy and paste, while a chef is a skilled and trained professional
who can create recipes from scratch. A
cook makes replicas while a chef originates. A chef’s responsibilities does
not end at cooking, it can include meal planning, overseeing kitchen affairs
etc.
After you have established the difference between a chef
and a cook, the second thing to take note of is the different types of chefs.
There are at least 12 types of chefs, I will mention 5:
1. Executive
Chef : This can also be called the head
chef. His/her job is to manage all kitchen activity, anything going in or
coming out of the kitchen must have his approval. He gets the first taste of
every meal to determine if its good enough for customers or guests etc.
2. Sous
Chef: In order of hierarchy, he is second in command. He works closely with
the Executive chef to make sure things run smoothly. He communicates directly
with other chefs and makes valid decisions.
3. Pastry
Chef: This chef handles the preparation of all baked goods. He takes care
of any dish or part of a dish that would need to be baked.
4. Prep
Chef: This chef makes sure that the
kitchen is ready for cooking to take place. He handles the initial stage of
cooking like, washing, cutting/slicing of vegetables etc
5. Commis
Chef: This chef undergoes training from other chefs; he can be called an
apprentice. While undergoing training he assists in the preparation of dishes.
These
are some of the different types of chefs.
Other
types of chefs you must know and take note of are:
The part-time chef
The full time chef : The live-in full time chef and
The live-out full
time chef
As the names imply, the part-time chef works for specific hours of whatever days are agreed
on.
The full time chef
works every work day for all work hours. The live-in chef is accommodated by his employer and works all hours of
everyday as the employer sees fit.
While
The live-out chef
resumes at the employer’s place of work and has a closing time, like a regular
9 – 5 job.
The next thing to consider when hiring a chef is your purpose.
What is your purpose for hiring a chef.
Do you just need a chef for an event you are planning?
Or, you need a chef to oversee your restaurant?
Maybe, you need a chef for your home.
Your purpose of hiring a chef is very important and must
