THE
NIGERIA OF OUR DREAMS
Nigeria we hail thee!
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may
differ,
In brotherhood we stand,
Nigerians all, and proud to
serve our sovereign Motherland.
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice
reign,
In peace or battle
honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.
O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and
plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
This was our national anthem used from 1960 till 1978
composed by Lillian jean Williams.
It looks like it foretold the future howbeit
differently.
The Nigeria we looked forward to was one where truth and
justice reigned.
A land filled with peace and plenty.
Where every man was equal and oppression was a thing of
the past.
However,
What we have today is the exact opposite of every
statement in this previous anthem.
The land our forefathers fought for and passed on has
been desecrated.
Our lands have soaked up blood and swallowed up the
bodies of our children.
Our rulers have committed a grave sin,
They have passed down a flag filled with the blood of
the ones they swore to protect;
Green, white, green has become blood red.
Today,
We are running from the ones we were supposed to run to
for help.
We are scared of the ones who promised to protect us.
Our leaders have gone rogue.
Peace is now an illusion.
Plenty is a mirage.
Parents are burying their children.
The Nigeria we fought for is nowhere to be found.
What is the way forward?
No man can do this alone
So we say
All hands on deck
It’s time to take charge;
Arise O compatriots,
Nigeria’s call obey
To serve our fatherland
With love and strength and
faith
The labour of our heroes
past
Shall never be in vain
To serve with heart and
might
One nation bound in
freedom, peace and unity.
Oh God of creation, direct
our noble cause
Guide our leaders’ right
Help our youth the truth to
know
In love and honesty to grow
And living just and true
Great lofty heights attain
To build a nation where
peace and justice shall reign.
