WHAT
THE FUTURE OF COOKING MIGHT LOOK LIKE
Ever wondered about the future?
Have you ever just looked back on your life, compared it
to the present and wondered what the future holds?
You must have, at least once.
One thing no one really pays attention to is the kitchen.
We all know food comes out of there, all our lives food
has always just emerged from the kitchen.
No one really wonders how humans evolved and learnt how
to mix spices, make fires, make easily digestible meals etc.
Shall we take a peek into the past?
THE
EVOLUTION OF COOKING AND THE KITCHEN
Did you know that up until about 2 million years ago,
humans ate their meat raw?
For humans to cook, they must first discover fire and
scientists believe that the first use of fire by humans may be around 2 million years ago although the controlled use of
fire was around 400,000 years ago.
In fact,
It is believed that the first time meat was cooked; it
may have been by accident.
Many methods of cooking have evolved over the years but
the first known method of cooking was roasting,
since then, other methods have come to be such as broiling, boiling, frying
etc.
In ancient times,
Your meals could depict your social status and your
social status would inevitably determine what you eat.
Also,
Kitchens
were a luxury that could be found only in
palaces, castles and the likes, the average man was not afforded such luxury.
Today however,
Kitchens are found in every house, home, apartment,
office etc.
We have definitely come a long way.
Man has evolved, times have changed and technology has
advanced.
The effects of technology can be noticed everywhere,
from our clothes to our machine every area of the human life has been touched
by technology.
Even the Kitchen.
THE
IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON THE KITCHEN
Technological advancement overtime has introduced
different ways of cooking which are easier and faster.
It has also changed the look of the kitchen from an
almost empty space with a fireplace to a room full of gadgets; the kitchen has
ultimately gone from a boring place to a very interesting space.
One of the most interesting things that technology has
afforded us is;
A
mobile Kitchen.
Technology has afforded us food at the click of a
button, gone are the days where you had to get home to get a home cooked meal.
This is the future.
And there is more to come.
THE
FUTURE OF COOKING
Some experts had this to say concerning what the future
holds:
Bee
Wilson, author of Consider the Fork: A History of How We Cook and Eat
had this to say:
Since writing a
book about the history of kitchen technology, I get asked about the future of
cooking a lot. And my wager is that the cooking of the future will look much
more like the cooking of the past than anyone usually predicts. I can’t see
wooden spoons becoming obsolete any time soon. I do think, however, that there
will be innovations in the way we shop for food and the kinds of pans and
stoves we use. Steam ovens will be the microwaves of the future and I also
predict a pressure cooker revival, because this tool represents such savings
not just of fuel but of time, without compromising on flavor. And in 20 years,
I’m convinced that most Americans will be buying groceries through online
delivery services and will feel amazed that they ever struggled to carry so
many heavy bags from the car to the front door every week.
I dare say this is already coming to pass.
Erica D. Senior research scientist and principal
investigator at the Sonnenburg Lab at Stanford
University in California, and co-author of The Good Gut said this when being interviewed by EatingWell:
“Once we understand
the way diet impacts the human microbiome in general, then we can see how it
applies to the individual. Everyone's microbiota is somewhat different, so in
the next five to 10 years we'll see the more personalized aspects of this
science—how each person can make food choices to specifically influence his or
her own microbiome and help prevent disease”.
The future obviously has a lot of surprises packed for us.
